As girls, we learned about getting our period and pregnancy. As women, we learn about pregnancy health and hormones. Yet most of us find ourselves completely unprepared for menopause and midlife health challenges. We’re out to change that. Premenopause is the time from puberty when you started menstrual periods through your 20s and 30s. Most women still have their periods. You may have hormonal fluctuations, but for the most part they are not noticeable.
Perimenopause start your 40s, or possibly earlier. You start to experience menstrual cycle changes and symptoms like hot flashes, sleep disturbances or mood swings. This signals that you may be transitioning into menopause.
Menopause is reached after you’ve missed 12 consecutive periods. Usually this occurs between the ages of 45-55, but some women reach menopause earlier due to cancer treatment, surgical removal of the ovaries, genetics, lifestyle factors, and other health conditions.
Postmenopause is the final stage after menopause. Once you reach menopause, you are officially considered post-menopausal. You may have symptoms for up to 10 years.
